Waiting months for NHS treatment creates stress and adds even more uncertainty to an already uncertain situation: When will you see a specialist? When will tests happen? When will your treatment get started?
British Life connects you with FCA-authorised advisers who specialise in Private Health Insurance across the UK. They work with the whole market to secure policies from top brands that give you prompt access to healthcare. Your adviser will make sure you understand exactly what’s covered, help you navigate pre-existing conditions and find the right balance between cover and price.
Imagine having the confidence of knowing you can access healthcare when you need it, receive faster treatment and secure peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
Discover how straightforward Private Health Insurance can be.
Our service is completely free. The advisers we connect you with are paid by insurers, but only when they secure appropriate cover for you. As for your monthly premiums, Private Health Insurance costs vary based on your age, where you live, the level of cover you choose and your medical history. Basic policies covering core treatments start from around £50–£100 per month, while comprehensive plans with lower excess and wider hospital choice cost more. Your adviser works within your budget to find suitable cover and can explain how different excess levels affect your price.
Most Private Health Insurance policies don’t cover pre-existing medical conditions. These are health issues you’ve had symptoms of, consulted a GP about or received treatment for before taking out the policy. However, some insurers offer moratorium underwriting, where pre-existing conditions can be covered if you’ve had no symptoms or treatment for two years. Your adviser will explain exactly how this works and help you understand what is and isn’t covered based on your health history.
Most insurers accept new members up to age 65–70, though some offer policies for older applicants. There’s typically no upper age limit once you’re covered, meaning you can keep your policy as long as you continue paying premiums. Costs do increase with age, particularly after 60, as the chance of needing treatment rises. Your adviser can show you how premiums might change over time and find insurers with the most competitive rates for your age group.
Private Health Insurance doesn’t replace the NHS. You’ll still have full access to NHS services whether or not you have private cover. The main difference is speed and choice. With private health insurance, you’ll typically see a specialist within days, choose your consultant and hospital and receive treatment much faster. The NHS provides excellent care but often with longer waiting times. Many people use both: NHS for A&E and routine GP care, and private insurance for specialist consultations and planned treatments where waiting would cause unnecessary stress or delay recovery.
It is possible to be protected with a life insurance or critical illness policy within 20 minutes provided the insurer does not require a GP report or medical.
A GP report or medical is normally required for large amounts of cover (over £400,000), or if your BMI is over 30, or you have any significant ongoing or past medical issues, or if you are involved in dangerous job or high risk hobby.
Find out how much cover you might need by using our simple online calculator. It will take into account your outstanding mortgage, any loans or credit cards, your monthly income and how many children you have.
Ultimately the right amount of cover is often a balance between what might be an ideal figure and what you can sensibly afford.
